What is blackjack?

Blackjack basic strategy
Basic strategy is the mathematically correct play for every hand combination. It cuts the house edge to 0.5%. Here are the core rules:
When to hit
Hit on 8 or less - always. Hit on 12-16 when the dealer shows 7 or more (they're likely to beat you otherwise). Hit soft 17 or less (A+6, A+5, etc.). Never hit on 17 or above.
When to stand
Stand on 17 or more - always. Stand on 12-16 when the dealer shows 2-6 (they have a high chance of busting). Stand on soft 18 or more (A+7, A+8, etc.).
When to double
Always double on 11. Double on 10 when the dealer shows 9 or less. Double soft 16-18 (A+5, A+6, A+7) against dealer's 2-6.
When to split
Always split aces and 8s. Never split 10s or 5s. Split 2s, 3s, 6s, 7s against dealer's 2-6. Split 4s only against dealer's 5-6.
When to surrender
Surrender 16 against dealer's 9, 10, or ace. Surrender 15 against dealer's 10. Not every casino offers surrender - if it's not available, hit instead.

When the dealer shows an ace, you can bet half your original wager that they have blackjack. Pays 2:1, but the house edge is around 7%. Basic strategy says decline it. Every time.
